Historical Commission To Hear About Mission Dolores

LIBERTY, July 7, 2017 - The Liberty County Historical will hold its regular quarterly meeting on Monday, July 17th, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. in the A.J. “Jack” Hartel Building, 318 San Jacinto Street, Liberty, Texas.  The public is invited and commission members are encouraged to attend.

Guest speaker will be Brooke Bonorden of the Texas Historical Commission.  Ms. Bonorden is the Educator/Interpreter for Mission Dolores State Historic Site in San Augustine, Texas.  She is a native of Ingleside, Texas and earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Anthropology from Baylor University and Texas Tech University.  Ms. Bonorden has conducted archaeological research across Texas, New Mexico and Belize.  Prior to joining the Texas Historical Commission at Mission Dolores, Bonorden worked for the City of Lubbock at the Silent Wings Museum.

Mission Dolores was a Spanish mission built in 1721 in what is now San Augustine County, just 20 miles west of the Texas-Louisiana border.  The site tells an important history about the Native American experience with Texas’ earliest European settlers.  Today, there are no historic above-ground remains of the mission, its location has been confirmed by archeological investigations and historical records.  Visitors can explore the site’s history at a museum where interpretive displays tell the story of Mission Dolores.  Mission Dolores is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and is a designated State Antiquities Landmark.  El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail also passes through the property.

Please plan to attend this meeting and welcome Brooke Bonorden of the Texas Historical Commission as she presents a program about this fascinating part of early colonial Texas history.  Also learn about the many projects in historic preservation and history in which your county historical commission is involved.  For more information about the Liberty County Historical Commission, please contact Linda Jamison, County Chair at lchc318@gmail.com or call 936-334-5813.
