Fatal Accident on North Main

LIBERTY, June 9, 2017 - On June 9, 2017 at approx. 6:00 a.m. Liberty Police responded to am accident in the 4700 block of North Main, directly in front of the North Main Baptist Church.  Upon arrival officers had to extinguish one vehicle which was on fire.

During the initial investigation it was determined that 31 year old Derrick Murray was traveling south on Hwy 146 in a 2016 Ford F-150 when he crossed the center line and collided with two other vehicles.  The 1st vehicle that Murray collided with was a 2004 F-250 traveling north which ended up rolled over on the east side of the roadway.  The second vehicle which was hit also traveling north was struck almost head on was a 2013 Kenworth Tractor Trailer combination.  The attached trailer was a LP Gas trailer which was empty at the time of the crash and did not suffer any damage.

Justice of the Peace Stephen Hebert pronounced 31 year old Derrick Murray of Splendora Texas dead at the scene.  Judge Hebert ordered an autopsy which will be performed in Jefferson County.  Liberty Police continue their investigation.  Also assisting at the scene was City of Liberty EMS, City of Liberty and Hardin Fire Department, City of Liberty Street Dept. and Liberty County Hazmat.  The roadway was not fully opened until approx. 2:00 p.m..  There will be some ongoing remediation work in the area the next couple of weeks.
